Father's Day: Update the guys in your life with the latest shirt styles

Sandra Pittana with a lesson in the most stylish dress shirts on the market.

Looking for a gift to get Dad this Father’s Day? Why not update the guy in your life with a new shirt! Sandra Pittana gives us a lesson in different types of collars — including the hottest current styles.

A downward pointed collar – This style was very popular four or five years ago, but this shirt hardly exists anymore! The market has moved to the trendy, spread collar.

English spread collar – This is the perfect collar to wear under a sports jacket without a tie. It opens up the neck and sits perfectly under the jacket. Sandra says “Do keep in mind that all of these shirts can be worn with a tie, just remember whether you need to double knot it to fill the space.”

Wide spread – The wide spread collar will frame his face beautifully, and is perfect for a fashion-conscious man or someone a little younger. This collar will dress up denim but keep it casual at the same time.

Total cutaway – This makes up 50-60% of the market right now, this type of collar, which lies in almost a straight-across line, is a great fashion update for any man!

Tab collar – This collar is found on a very elegant shirt, often done with a French cuff to display a beautiful cuff link. It gives a very clean fit to the body, and is a little more of a dressy style.

Very cutaway – Dolce & Gabbana has a very stylish, open cutaway option. This soft-collared look is very fashion forward and suits a man who wears a very slim suit.

Eton collar – This is perhaps the most sartorial option for men’s collars. This style of collar is worn at Eton College, it gives a very high-end, prep and privileged look. It works for a very particular, fashion forward man.

Button down – The button-down collar is classic look for men, typically worn under a blazer. However, Sandra says that today, it is acceptable to wear it many different ways. You can sport it open necked or closed neck with a tie, or open with a sports jacket, and even with a suit.
