Winterizing your facial routine

Derek Selby and Kirk Brierley shared their facial tips for surviving the winter months.

With the harsh winter temperatures on the way, it’s important to consider a change in facial routine to keep up with the drastic change in climate.  Derek Selby and Kirk Brierley shared their tips for surviving the winter months.

  1. Exfoliate – Kirk recommends doing a manual, beaded scrub twice to three times a week.  Look for a scrub with round beads to ensure they are not tugging and tearing at the skin surface.  It removes the excess dead skin cells and other particles preventing your moisturizer from working effectively.
  2. If you have active breakouts, avoid exfoliation – Kirk says that exfoliation will only break the acne open, and spread the bacteria around—thus being counter-productive to the exfoliation process.
  3. Changing up your foundation – If you have oilier skin and suffer from shine, get an oil-absorbing powder foundation, Derek recommends.  Conversely, if you have dry or mature skin, avoid this product.  It will over-accentuate the wrinkles and dry cracks.
  4. If you have dry to normaldry skin, be sure to bump up your moisturizer in the winter – Perhaps consider a cream, Derek says.  Find a hydrating, cream-based makeup, and you will notice an immediate, dewier appearance to your skin.
  5. If you are very dry, be sure to use extra primer – Derek recommends doubling up on the primer—one layer under the moisturizer and one layer on top.  You want to ensure you’re choosing the right moisturizer (and applying the right amount) per your age and skin type.  This will help you achieve the glowing look.
