A designer dad

Our "Modern Dad" Patrick Reynolds talked to designer Vern Yip about being a dad and how he and his partner approach fatherhood.

My “Around the House” producer Kate Moore recently said she had a design shoot that would be fun and had lots of perks attached to it. I would be going to NYC! Immediately I thought YES!! I love to travel! I had no idea the trip would take a back seat to getting a one-on-one interview with Vern Yip.

For those of you who don’t know, he’s the interior designer who’s been on Trading Spaces and various home design shows and has gathered quite the following. My coworkers knew him right away! Needless to say, Vern’s a busy guy. He lives in three different cities, runs his own design company and is involved in many charities. And to top it off has a very busy family life with his partner and two children. It wasn’t a surprise to me that our tour of his 800 sq foot loft in Manhattan overlooking Central Park went smoothly — he’s a one take wonder. The surprise for me was the ease, openness and insights of family life and parenting he shared with me. Giving up some personal info, even for a TV star, is not always an easy thing to do.

This blog has allowed me to peek into the lives of so many “successful dads” or dads who have acquired valuable lessons that can help or be of great service to other parents) and Vern is no exception. He left me with plenty of takeaways in our meeting, such as teaching respect, appreciation and starting good habits at an early age — just to name a few.

What a wonderful family. Thanks for the dad chat Vern.
