DIY artwork inspired by agate stones

Make a statement without breaking the bank with this agate stone-inspired DIY project!

If you’re looking to make a statement in a small room but don’t have a large budget, designer Antonio Bellusci has the project for you! Here are his instructions for DIY artwork inspired by the beauty of agate stones.

Materials:

  • Pencil
  • Watercolour paper (300 lb paper)
  • Watercolour paints
  • Water
  • Sponge
  • Tape
  • Paint brushes
  • Sea salt
  • Glitter glue
  • Frame

Instructions:

  1. Lightly sketch design or shape on paper.
  2. Wet the paper.
  3. Lay wet paper on a flat surface and using a sponge, soak up/wipe excess water still leaving paper wet.
  4. Tape paper to flat surface on all four sides.
  5. Using watercolour paint, brush on colour in agate shape – fill in design.
  6. While the initial colour is still wet, add a ring of a contrasting colour (dab the paint brush rather than brushing for a more loose and irregular appearance – notice how the second colour diffuses into original colour.)
  7. Continue applying rings of colour using contrasting colours.
  8. Sprinkle sea salt over your design to create a coral/crystal effect (sea salt will absorb paint.)
  9. Once dried, shake paper to remove excess sea salt.
  10. Using a fine edge paint brush, add thin rings of colour to add definition.
  11. Add glitter glue around the outer edge and sparsely in the center.
  12. Frame and hang.
