Finding the perfect foundation for your skin

Beauty expert Derek Selby shares his top tips for finding the perfect foundation, and how to avoid the most common pitfalls.

Even makeup fanatics know how hard it can be to find the right foundation to match your skin tone! Fortunately, beauty expert Derek Selby shared his top tips for finding the perfect foundation, and how to avoid the most common pitfalls:

  • The four most common problems with foundation is picking a colour that’s too light, too dark, too pink, or too gold. If you pick a colour that’s too dark, it will look muddy or dirty on your skin. If you pick a colour that’s too light, it will make your skin look chalky. The right colour, when blended properly into your skin, should disappear onto your face and help cover your blemishes.
  • Don’t test foundation on your hands! The colour of your hands isn’t the same as the colour of your face, so always match your foundation to where you’re actually going to wear it. To properly test foundation, you have to put it on your face and blend it in to your skin.
  • In a climate like Canada’s, you may find that your skin is a shade or two darker in the summer, and lighter in the winter. It’s worth it to find the right colours to match your skin for each season.
