DIY headboard

Materials & tools:

  • Masonite boards
  • Styrofoam 2 inches thick
  • Construction adhesive
  • Sand paper
  • Fabric & thread
  • Jigsaw or hand saw
  • Measuring tools
  • Caulking tool
  • Sewing machine and sewing tools
  • Iron
  • Straight edge / ruler

Method for headboard:

Cut masonite board into headboard desired shape or design and sand rough edges.

Cut pieces of styrofoam to create blocking for inside headboard.

Sandwich styrofoam with masonite cut-outs on both sides of styrofoam and glue together.

Method for slip cover:

Lay fabric out on flat surface.

Place headboard overtop fabric and trace headboard outline on fabric with pencil or fabric chalk.

Using a ruler or straight edge, draw an additional outline ¼ inches away or larger than the original outline, creating a “sew line.”

Prepare all of the fabric pieces, front, back, top & sides.

Pin fabric together along sew lines (2nd outline) with good sides facing in.

Sew fabric together along sew line (2nd outline).

Cut excess seams and iron seams opened (fold open) to minimize bulkiness in seams.

Iron the bottom edge to create hem and sew along folded edge.

Modifications to the slipcover may be required to secure the headboard to the bed or wall (ie. a notch or removed section in the slipcover to allow for screws to pass through the headboard).

Approximate cost $50-$100 pending fabric cost
