4 surprising foundation myths

When it comes to foundation, we think we know how and why to pick a particular product. That's why what Sara Whittaker has to say may surprise you!

Foundation is one product that we almost always apply, because we’re all looking for that flawless finish. Tracy sat down with Clinique’s Sara Whittaker recently to talk about foundation myths. As it’s one of the most important parts of our daily makeup regime, Sara wants us to be on point.

Foundation myths

1. When choosing foundation, your first consideration should be finding your correct shade.

False! Finding the right shade is a part of — but not the most important component in — choosing a foundation. First and foremost is finding one that fits your skin. The thing about foundation is that it’s really the bridge between skincare and colour. So you want to find one that will create that flawless finish but also support whichever skin concerns you have. You can find foundations with anti-aging, softening lines, acne, uneven pigmentation, and more.

2. The easiest way to match your foundation is to your hand.

False! Your hands are traditionally dryer than your face and are exposed to more UV light. Sara says the best spot to test foundation is actually on your face, on the front of your cheek. Try about 2-3 shades and look to see which one disappears—that is the right one for you, and even if you think you’ve found the perfect one right away, always try an extra one just to be safe.

3. Foundation needs to be applied equally all over the face to make it look natural.

False! This is how you create a mask. Consider where you need the most coverage, often tends to be the centre panel of the face where you can blend it outward. You do want to make sure your skin shows through because it is about enhancing your skin not about covering it up.

4. Once you’ve found your perfect foundation shade then stick with it.

Often, we tend to marry ourselves to one shade of foundation and the reality is our skin type and tone can change throughout the year. You do not want to be using the same foundation in February that you are in the middle of August. Most companies (including Clinique) will give you samples to try. So if you love one foundation and are not keen on experimenting, try a sample. Remember, there are different forms of foundation, liquids, compacts and powders—so you have plenty of options.
