Get a Gatsby-inspired makeup look

Channel your inner Daisy with Derek Selby's modern take on 1920s glam.

Derek Selby gives a Gatsby-inspired, modern makeup lesson so you can look as glamorous as Daisy! This is a softer, modern update of the 1920s makeup look worn by Carey Mulligan’s character Daisy in the new movie, The Great Gatsby. Two of the popular looks in the 1920s were the smoky eye and a strong red, oxblood or burgundy lip. However, throughout the film, Daisy wears a much softer look which is very wearable for the modern woman.

Step 1: Even, matte complexion.

Start off your look with an even complexion by using a matte foundation.

Step 2: Blush.

Derek uses a cream blush, but applies it with a brush. For cream blush, Derek says that “a little goes a long way”. This type of blush will give your face some structure and gives a bit of a flushed, balanced look.

Derek’s trick: If you’ve put on too much blush, blend it in using your foundation brush. It adds a little of the foundation residue to balance out the blush.

Step 3:  Jazz up the eyes.

In the 1920s, the eyes were smoky, with shimmer and sparkles. For a softer version, Derek uses a pewter coloured eye shadow. When applying the eye shadow, Derek says: “Keep the colour in the crease”. In the original look, women would wear a very strong eyeliner all around the eye, however this is a little too dramatic for this softer, modern update.

Step 4: Stick with a neutral lip, similar to the colour Daisy wears in the film.

When wearing this look, the most important thing is to have balance between the eyes, cheeks and lips.

A finishing touch if you’re going out to a party is to do a curl-under with your hair, giving you a cute bob without an actual cut!
