Cityline Featured Blogger: Michael Lewicki from Verses from my Kitchen

Michael combines his love of food with his passion for writing, and features a stunning collection of photos.

There are so many fabulous bloggers out there, and we want to highlight them on Cityline.ca. We’ll be profiling different lifestyle bloggers from month to month — they might write about food, fashion, beauty, décor, parenting, entertaining, gardening, you get the idea! For February 2013, we’re putting the spotlight on the mouthwatering Verses from my Kitchen. Run by Michael Lewicki, the blog combines Michael’s love of food with his passion for writing, and features a stunning collection of photos. Here’s our Q&A with Michael:

When did you start Verses from my Kitchen and what was the inspiration behind starting the blog? How did you come up with your blog’s name?

I started Verses from my Kitchen just over two years ago. I’ve always loved food (I worked in restaurants for years) and writing was a passion of mine so I decided to combine the two. I didn’t have to look far for some inspiration. My wife had recently started up a lifestyle blog and she suggested I combine my two loves and do the same with a food blog. As for the name, it was made up in an effort to show what the blog is about: writing and my love of being in the kitchen.

We love great food photography and yours is gorgeous! Do you have a background in photography?

Thank you! When I started up the blog I had little to no knowledge of photography. My wife always had point-and-shoot cameras, and one day we were looking to upgrade so we decided to change cameras and purchase a DSLR. We both caught the bug. Initially, I spent my time focusing on the camera for my blog and my wife started shooting friends and family. Within a year my wife changed careers and started her own business as a wedding photographer and I shoot with her. So for the last year in a bit we’ve been capturing weddings all over Ontario and in destinations across the world.

What do you hope readers get from visiting your blog?

I hope they get inspired to experiment with different ingredients and cook for their loved ones. There is nothing more relaxing and exciting than shopping at the market and cooking that night for your wife or spouse or friends. Great food brings people together.

Tell us about a post (or two!) that you’re particularly proud of and want to share with Cityline.ca readers.

What are some other blogs you love reading?

I read so many blogs, albeit mostly food blogs. This is a shortened list, because it could go on and on. Non-food and obviously biased is my wife’s Wendy Alana Photography, because it’s honest and real and filled with emotion. My favourite Canadian food blogs are The Gouda Life, Dinner with Julie, Seven Spoons, Simple Bites, Forty-Sixth at Grace, and Sweetapolita. For the rest of the food blogs there are Bakers Royale, Cannelle et Vanille, A Thought For Food, Honey and Jam, Not Without Salt, Souvlaki for the Soul and so many more. For the full list, check out my blog.

What’s your top advice for other bloggers?

Find something you’re passionate about because blogging is and can be a lot of work. It’s time consuming and frustrating. But it is so rewarding and gives back all the time. Plus, it connects you with other wonderful like-minded people. Most importantly, be yourself. Have your own style and writing voice and try to forge your own path. People will connect with you because you’re authentic.
