Old-School Summer Crafts Your Kids Will Love

Kids love to get crafty! Here are some vintage crafts with a modern twist for you to make with your little ones this summer.

I don’t what it is about summer, but every time the weather gets warmer I feel inspired to craft with my kids. I have very fond memories of crafting as a child. I am pretty sure the afternoons spent tie-dying shirts and making friendship beads were what led me to be so DIY-obsessed as an adult!

Even though the world has changed a lot since I was a kid (gee, that was depressing to write!), kids still love to get crafty. Here are my top picks for old-school crafts with a modern twist for you to make with your little ones this summer.

pet-rocks1. Pet Rocks

Pet rocks are such a great way to introduce your child to the world of crafts. The best part about them is that the possibilities are endless. You can make everything from a flower, to a frog, to Darth Vader! Use paint and, if you want to add more detail, embellish them with things like googly eyes or yarn for hair. These monster rocks from Cocoa Bean are adorable and the owls by Lori-Lee Thomas are a hoot!

2. Friendship Bracelets

I spent hours braiding and sharing bracelets with my friends back in the day, but they never looked even close to this fabulous. I love these stylish takes on this colourful craft, made from beads, by Craft and Creativity, and t-shirts, from Henry Happened.

birdhouses3. Birdhouses

Whether it was out of a milk carton, a pop bottle or scrap pieces of wood, who has not made a birdhouse as a child? I love this pretty spin on it, from Yvestown. These may not be functional, but they are so beautiful. They would be perfect in a child’s bedroom or playroom.

4. Pinwheels

Paper pinwheels are another great craft to make with children. And they make for an excellent photo-op as your child tests it in the wind. These flower pinwheels by Heather Bailey are adorable and easy to make.
